Archie Cooley, innovative football coach who unleashed wide receiver Jerry Rice in the run and shoot offense while at Mississippi Valley State, has been named new head coach at Norfolk State University.
Cooley, known as "the gunslinger," succeeds coach Willard Bailey and becomes the 13th head football coach at Norfolk State since 1938. Cooley was offensive coordinator at Southern University last year. He promises a return to wide-open football for the Spartans, who were 3-7 last season.
"We'll do some things that have not been done lately and hope to put some excitement, along with a return to the winning tradition, back into the game at Norfolk State," said Cooley. "A winner is not that far away. There are many things we can do to make the offense go and well find a way."
