Jet, Feb 1, 1993

It was a happy birthday for R&B singing legend Ruth Brown when she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on her 65th birthday during ceremonies in Los Angeles.

Ms. Brown popularized such '50s R&B tunes as Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean, 5-10-15 Hours and Teardrops. From My Eyes.

Ms. Brown, who has won a Tony and a Grammy, celebrated her success by singing her 1953 hit Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean with her longtime friend, superstar Bonnie Raitt during the ceremonies at the Century Plaza Hotel.

Other Black music performers inducted included blues legend Etta James (At Last and All I Could Do Was Cry) (see page 41), Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers (Why Do Fools Fall In Love), and Sly and the Family Stone (Stand and I Want to Take You Higher).

The late Queen of the Blues Dinah Washington was honored posthumously with an award for early influence. She popularized such standards What A Difference A Day Makes and This Bitter Earth.
