BET and Microsoft team up to go on-line

Jet, Feb 26, 1996

Black Entertainment Television (BET) and Microsoft Corp. recently announced a joint venture to provide on-line programming for Black people.

People hooked up to the new on-line service can access hit R&B titles, read Emerge and YSB magazine stories, and read and comment on other topics.

The venture should "push modems into Black homes" said BET Chairman Robert Johnson.

A study showed that 11 percent of Black households owned home computers and just 520,000 owned modems, the device used to link computers to phone lines in order to access on-line services. Twenty-nine percent of White households owned computers and 10.1 million owned., modems.

The new venture is equally owned by BET and Microsoft and is managed from BET headquarters in Washington, D.C.
