Library Journal selects Dr. Carla D. Hayden as the 1995 Librarian of the Year
Jet, March 4, 1996
Dr. Carla D. Hayden, director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library (EPFL) in Baltimore, MD, recently was named 1995 Librarian of the Year by Library Journal, the nation's top publication in the library professional world, making her the first Black and the first Pratt librarian to receive this honor.
"In our industry, this is as big as it gets," said Dr. Hayden, who was presented the award during the American Library Association's Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio, TX.
A former deputy commissioner of the Chicago Public Library, the native Chicagoan joined the EPFL as director in July of 1993.
Dr. Hayden's success in working with the community and Library board to secure increased public and private funds for the EPFL and restoring Saturday service in all branch libraries were a few of the many reasons given by the journal for its selection of Dr. Hayden to receive this prestigious honor.
