San Antoniuo Spurs makes trade for forward Charles Smith

Jet, March 4, 1996

The San Antonio Spurs, in an effort to fill the void left at the power forward position, recently acquired Charles Smith and Monty Williams from the New York Knicks in a trade for J. R. Reid, Brad Lohaus and a 1996 first-round draft choice.

The Spurs were in first place of the Midwest Division at All-Star break, but were still missing a consistent power forward since Dennis Rodman was traded to the Bulls at the start of the season.

Smith, 30, a 6-foot-10 forward, had career lows this season in New York, averaging 7.4 points and 3.9 rebounds. His career averages are 15.7 points and 6.0 rebounds.

Williams, 24, rarely was used this season and averaged 1.4 points in only 14 games this season.

Reid, a 27-year-old, 6-foot-9 forward, is expected to back up Knicks forwards Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason.

Lohaus, a 6-foot-11, three-point shooter, will be playing for his seventh NBA team in his 10-year career.
