Jazz legends Louis Armstrong, Eubie Blake, John Coltrane, Erroll Garner, Coleman Hawkins, James P. Johnson, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Jelly Roll Morton and Charlie Parker are appearing together in the U.S. Postal Service's latest Legends of American Music Stamp series.
The commemorative stamps will be issued Sept. 16, at the Monterey Jazz Festival in Monterey, CA, and will go on sale nationwide Sept. 18.
However, because of popular demand, a single stamp spotlighting trumpeter Louis Armstrong goes on sale nationwide Sept. 1, coinciding with the opening of the second annual American Music Stamp Festival in New Orleans. There, officials will dedicate the commemorative stamp saluting Armstrong.
The festival, which stars jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, kicks off a month-long celebration during which the Postal Service will premier the ten stamps featuring the jazz artists.
The jazz musicians stamps are the ninth issue in the Postal Service's popular series which began with the issuance of the Elvis Presley stamp in 1993.
