Rev. Al Sharpton gets baptized in Brooklyn

Jet, Feb 28, 1994

The Rev. Al Sharpton took to the holy water recently in New York to be re-baptized as a Baptist.

With family members, friends and his mentor, the Rev. Jesse Jackson looking on, Sharpton, 39, participated in a full-body immersion at the Bethany Baptist Church in Brooklyn.

After he was dipped in the water by the Rev. William Jones, Sharpton pumped his hands in the air in jubilation as he rose from the holy water. The church was filled with worshippers who applauded as he did so.

At age 3, Sharpton was baptized in the Pentecostal faith and became an ordained Pentecostal minister when he was 10.

He said he will be part of the ministerial group of the church.

Sharpton's wife, Kathy, was also recently re-baptized. Their daughters Dominique, 7, and Ashley, 6, have also been baptized.
