Tiger Woods wins 3rd straight golf title - Brief Article

Jet, August 30, 1993

With all the hype of the Chicago Bulls' NBA World Championship three-peat, a young golf phenom, Eldrick "Tiger" Woods, recently accomplished a trifecta of his own.

Woods, 17, won his third consecutive U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship at the Waverly Golf Course and Country Club in Portland, Ore. He is the only golfer ever to win three straight titles.

A Los Angeles resident, Woods says he wantrs to be known as "the Michael Jordan of golf." He earned his most recent title with a dramatic flair that would have made "His Airness" proud.

Down by two holes to Ryan Armour from Ohio with two holes left to play, Woods calmly birdied the 17fh and 18th holes to tie the match and send it into a sudden death playoff round. He cinched the victory by sinking a par putt on the 19th hole, sealing his three-peat championship status. Two years ago, at age 15, Woods became the first Black to win the prestigious title.

Woods has attempted to unlock the mysteries of golf to inner-city Blacks who shy away from a game believed to be exclusively for Whites. Coupled with Jordan's obsession with golf, more youngsters are finding the links more acceptable.
