Jet, March 7, 1994
Seagram's Gin recently unveiled "American Family In Blue," a painting by renowned actor, dancer, choreographer Geoffrey Holder, during ceremonies at the New York Public Library.
Holder was commissioned by Seagram's Gin to create a work of art depicting the rich cultural heritage of the Black family. From the painting, which depicts a Black couple and their daughter and son, 100 limited edition lithographic prints will be made and sold with proceeds going to the National Urban League.
Over the past seven years, Seagram's Gin has commissioned such gifted artists as James Denmark, Louis Delsarte, Synthia St. James and Gordon Parks, to produce an original work that captures their view of the Black family. The proceeds from the annual sale of art work is an expression of "positive commitment to the African-American community" by Seagram's Gin.
John E. Jacob, NUL president and CEO, said of the effort, "Each limited edition print that is purchased brings rewards to its owner and thousands of African-Americans who are helped by the National Urban League." He urges those interested in purchasing a new signed lithograph by Holder or any of the earlier works by the other distinguished artists to write the NUL at 500 E. 62nd St., New York, NY, 10021 or call 212-310-9000.
