Sugar Ray Leonard decides not to retire
Jet, March 24, 1997
Five days after being thrashed by Hector Comacho and declaring that his "career is definitely over," Hall of Fame boxer Sugar Ray Leonard said that he will fight again.
Leonard, who was defeated by the International Boxing Council middle weight champion by a fifth-round technical knock-out, revealed his decision on ESPN's "Up Close."
"I'm not retiring," he said. "To say I'm going to go back and fight a champion, again, no. I'm going to take it easy."
Leonard, who earned $4 million in the bout, had said he was coming out of retirement again to start a Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation.
Coming back to boxing was a matter of pride for Leonard, who reportedly looked to restore his credibility as "Sugar Ray" to launch him toward bigger things like a possible shot at the WBC welterweight title.
