49ers' Jerry Rice will miss NFL season because of knee injury

San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Jerry Rice, who, until now, has never missed a game because of an injury in his 13-season NFL career, has been sidelined for the rest of the season because of a damaged knee.
Rice was injured during the 49ers season-opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; the 49ers lost 13-6. The damage was done in the second quarter of the game when Rice was tackled and pulled from behind by the face mask by Tampa Bay defensive tackle Warren Sapp, who was penalized on the play.
Team physician Michael Dillingham performed successful surgery at Stanford Hospital to repair ligament damage to Rice's left knee.
Rice, the NFL's career leader in touchdowns, receptions and receiving yardage, is expected to be out of action four to six months.
