Superstar rapper-actor LL Cool J was recognized for his years of innovative videos when he took home a top honor at the recent 1997 MTV Video Music Awards. LL was this year's Video Vanguard recipient.
Other big winners included famed rapper-actor Will Smith, who won Best Video From A Film for his performance of Men In Black, Puff Daddy featuring Faith and 112, who won Best R & B Video for Missing You, their musical eulogy to the late slain rapper Notorious B.I.G., and the late rapper himself, who was posthumously awarded Best Rap Video for Hypnotize.
Popular comedian-actor Chris Rock hosted the event, which was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
