The late former U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall, whose stellar career spanned the Civil Rights era, recently was honored for his contributions to the press by an international advocacy group for free press and speech.

The Freedom Forum presented its Free Spirit Award and $100,000 each to Marshall, whose son Thurgood Marshall Jr. accepted the award in memory of his father, and former Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr. The awards were presented during a dinner at the World Center in Arlington, Va.

"Justices Brennan and Marshall's contributions to the history of our country testify to the power of an unyielding free spirit," said Allen H. Neuharth, chairman of the forum.

"No Americans in the 20th century did so much for human rights as they did," remarked former Chief Justice Warren Burger in a letter to the awards dinner.

Also on hand for the dinner were Carl Rowan, whose book on Marshall's life was recently released.
