Jet, March 8, 1993

Dr. Arthur E. Thomas, president of Central State University, has been elected to serve a three-year term on the Board of the American Council on Education (ACE).

ACE is a membership association of more than 1,600 colleges and universities and national and regional education associations which provides comprehensive leadership for improving educational standards, policies, procedures, and services.

In addition to conducting leadership training programs through the Center for Leadership Development, ACE represents the interests of member institutions before the Congress and with federal agencies.

Dr. Thomas currently serves as chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), an association representing the nation's 117 historically Black institutions of higher education.

He also is chairman of NAFEO's International Committee and has been very active in the development of relationships between African-American institutions and the nations of Africa.

Dr. Thomas also recently was appointed to the Campus Advisory Group of the Association Liaison Office to the U.S. Agency for International Development's Center for University Cooperation in Development. The liaison office represents ACE, NAFEO, and four other higher education associations.

While advancing a national and global interest in educational opportunity, Dr. Thomas, a 1962 CSU graduate who became president of the university in 1985, has focused his attention on Central State University and its programs to prepare students for the challenging career fields of the 21st century.
