Jet, Sept 12, 1994
Alex Williams, the first Black elected Prince George's County state's attorney, who for more than a year sought approval, finally was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as federal district judge in Maryland.
A former Howard University law professor, Williams was elected the state's attorney in 1986. He was considered the political hope in the Washington bedroom community, only to be defeated two years ago for a congressional seat by Rep. Albert Wynne.
Confirmed without objection for the $130,000-a-year judicial post, the new judge will be pleased to find that he will become one of the first judges to occupy a new federal court house under construction in Greenbelt, MD, that is scheduled to be completed next year.
