Danitra Vance, 35, dies; 1st black woman to join regular 'Saturday Night Live' cast

Danitra Vance, 35, who was the first Black woman to join the regular cast of "Saturday Night Live," died recently of cancer at her grandfather's home in Markham, IL.

A Chicago native, Ms. Vance performed with the Second City comedy troupe in the city. She graduated with honors from Roosevelt University in Chicago. After moving to New York in 1981, she appeared in numerous off-Broadway productions, including The Colored Museum and Spunk, for which she won an Obie Award. She joined NBC-TV's "Saturday Night Live" during the 1985-86 season.

In addition to her grandfather, Clarence M. Edwards, survivors include her mother, Laura Vance; and a sister, Latrice Lee.
