Moore N. Moore Jr., treasurer of the Commonwealth of Virginia, has been appointed president of Virginia State University. He is expected to assume the presidency June 1. Moore is currently the head of the state's Treasury Dept. and serves on 15 state boards and authorities that oversee more than $20 billion of Virginia's assets. Virginia State University is historically Black and has an enrollment of 4,400 students.
Moore has a masters degree in business administration from the University of Pittsburgh.
Teacher Shortage Troubles Mississippi Schools
Mississippi Delta school districts are having a tough time hiring teachers to work in the poverty-ridden region.
The state Department of Education reports that 25 Delta school districts had more than 50 openings at the middle of this school year. With Mississippi providing some of the nation's lowest pay and few benefits, the numbers are expected to rise.
