Dr. Samuel C. Coleman, at age 103, was honored as the oldest living Black veteran on this day. He enlisted in the Army on September 29, 1898. He served in San Juan, Puerto Rico following the Spanish-American War and was honorably discharged on June 29, 1899. After returning to civilian life, Dr. Coleman studied medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. He received his medical degree in 1903 and set up Practice in the Arkansas communities of Pine Bluff, Hot Springs, Fordyce and Arkansas City. Shortly after his 100th birthday, Dr. Coleman retired from medical practice.
