Seattle Mariners outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. recently received the 1997 Player of the Year Award as baseball's best player at the Players Choice Awards in Orlando, FL.

"Being recognized by my fellow players, both team-mates and sometime rivals, means so much to me because it comes from the guys who play the game and know it best," Griffey said in the Orlando Sentinel.

Griffey hit 56 home runs with 147 RBIs for Seattle and won a Gold Glove for center-field play.

Griffey was the event's only double award-winner, also receiving American League Outstanding Player Of The Year honors.
