Ft. Worth coach Hughes reaches 1,000 win plateau - Fort Worth Dunbar High School basketball head coach Robert Hughes - Brief Article
Jet, March 15, 1993
With 1,000 high school basketball coaching victories under his belt, Robert Hughes looks forward to the task at hand - post-season competition.
The 64-year-old coach at Fort Worth (Texas) Dunbar High joins only five other high school coaches in the entire country with 1,000 or more victories.
Jubilant fans and high school students and faculty were poised for a celebration when Dunbar recently defeated Wyatt High 63-51. But Hughes managed to take his personal milestone in stride.
"I know this is 1,000 and I'm only the sixth guy to do it. But I just wanted to win the game," Hughes mentioned.
"Maybe it will sink in later tonight," he added. "I might jump up in bed at 2 a.m. and say: |1,000 victories.'"
Dunbar once again clinched its district with a 10-0 record and held a 28-4 record overall at Jet press deadline.
