Ex-QB James Harris named Jets Asst. Gen. Manager - former quarterback chosen as assistant general manager for the New York Jets - Brief Article

Jet, March 15, 1993

James Harris, a standout quarterback for a dozen seasons in the NFL, and one of the first Black starting quarterbacks in the league, has been hired by the New York Jets as an assistant general manager.

"James and I go back to the '70s when we were both at the Rams and we have stayed in touch ever since," said Jets general manager Dick Steinberg. "He always had a great understanding of the game and has become an excellent evaluator of talent."

Harris, 45, had been serving as a West Coast scout for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the past six years. He played for the Buffalo Bills, the Los Angeles Rams and the San Diego Chargers, leading the NFL with an 89.8 passing rating in 1976 with the Rams.

"I'm glad to get this opportunity to work with one of the most respected people in the field in Dick Steinberg," said Harris, who played collegiate ball at Grambling State, leading the Tigers to the SWAC title in 1967. "I expect to learn from him and hopefully contribute along the way."
