Sanders signs whopping 7-year, $25 million deal will Cowboys
Jet, Sept 25, 1995
Two-sport superstar Deion Sanders recently signed a seven-year, $25 million contract with the NFL Dallas Cowboys, which includes a $13 million signing bonus.
Sanders, who is currently playing baseball for the San Francisco Giants, added he plans to have arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle when baseball season ends in October and it is not clear when he will be ready to join the team.
Sanders reportedly can earn a $1 million bonus in his baseball contract if he remains on the roster at the end of season.
The All-Pro football cornerback known as "Prime Time" had been courted by several teams, including his old team, the defending Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers, who could not match the Cowboys' offer.
"I'm glad it's all over. Every man in the world owes it to his family to get security," said Sanders. He and wife Carolyn have two children, Deiondra, 5, and Deion Jr., 2.
The Cowboys and the 49ers are expected to be Super Bowl contenders this year. At Jet press time, both teams had 2-0 records.
