Jet, April 7, 1997

John Thompson, Jr., Georgetown University's basketball coach, became the first Black coach to win an NCCA Division I championship on this day. Thompson played for the Boston Celtics for two years before he gave up his professional basketball career in 1966 to become a social worker and teacher. After he earned his master's degree and coached basketball at a Catholic high school, Thompson, in 1972, became the head basketball coach at George I town University.

The Hoyas, led by center Patrick Ewing, won its first NCCA Championship on April 2, 1984.
