TAIWANESE GREETING: Retired Gen. Colin Powell is greeted by Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui at the president's office in Taipei. The former chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, who was in Taipei on the first leg of an Asia-Pacific lecture tour, encouraged continued U.S. support for Taiwan.

He said it was in America's interest to help Taiwan to maintain adequate defenses. He underscored Washington's commitment to provide Taiwan with defensive weapons as the island announced plans to buy U.S.-made Stinger antiaircraft missiles.
