Mary McLeod Bethune: October 3, 1904

> Mary McLeod Bethune, educator, opened Daytona Normal and Industrial School for Black women in Daytona Beach, FL, on this day. The school merged in 1923 with Cookman Institute and became Bethune-Cookman College, where Bethune served as president until 1947. Bethune also directed the minority affairs division of the National Youth Administration, making her the first Black woman to head a federal office.
