Frederick Douglass

Jet, Oct 13, 1997

Frederick Douglass arrived in Port-au-Prince on this day to serve as U.S. Minister to Haiti. Appointed by President William Henry Harrison, Douglass was minister to Haiti until 1891. Douglass, a noted abolitionist, author and orator, was born a slave. Douglass dedicated his life to eradicating slavery and ending segregation in churches, schools and on public trains.

To that end, he published the antislavery newspaper, the North Star, and housed run-away slaves on the Underground Railroad. He wrote three autobiographies including Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.
