A man who was stabbing his girlfriend near their apartment on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor recently was killed by a school police officer. The girlfriend died also, authorities said.

The man, Kevin Nelson, 26, was seen stabbing his girlfriend, Tamara Williams, a 20-year-old senior, when the officer arrived on the scene in response to 911 calls.

The officer fired when Nelson refused to obey his order to stop attacking Williams.

Both Nelson and Williams died in surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center.

The campus police got several calls of an attack in progress, officials said. Nelson started stabbing Williams in their apartment, said Leo Heatley, campus public safety director. "She was able to get to a neighbor's home and knock on the window," Heatley said.

Williams' 2 1/2-year-old daughter was asleep in the apartment and was placed in protective custody. Nelson was not affiliated with the school.

Nelson was convicted of a domestic assault on Williams in 1995, according to university spokeswoman Julie Peterson. A friend of Williams told the Associated Press that despite frequent quarrels with Nelson, Williams was not scared and never felt it was a serious problem. the action, California Rep Maxine Waters, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, and D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton pledged their support to the women.

Said Jewell Lewis-Hall, one of the custodians, "Members of Congress are always talking about how we shouldn't stand for discrimination. They say it's wrong, and the workers are entitled to fairness and dignity. It's a shame that such an attack on dignity and fairness is being done right here in the U. S. Capitol."
