Joycelyn Elders joins GW medical faculty

U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, who has developed a reputation as an outspoken advocate of new health measures, has been named an adjunct professor of pediatrics at The George Washington University Medical Center, the nation's second-ranked graduate school, according to the U.S. News and World Report.
Dr. Gordon B. Avery, chairman of the pediatric department, announcing the appointment, said, "We are honored that she will share her knowledge and experience with the GW faculty and student body. We will all benefit enormously from her contribution."
Serving as director of the Arkansas Department of Health from 1987 to 1993, Dr. Elders previously was a member of the faculty of the University of Arkansas Medical Center in Little Rock. She is board certified in pediatric endocrinology and has published more than 150 articles in medical research publications.
