U.S. House votes to extend King Holiday Commission five years

The House voted recently to extend the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission for five years.

The measure which was passed on a voice vote authorizes $2 million over five years for the 40-member commission, which was scheduled to expire April 20.

Although the commission has completed its original mandate of encouraging nationwide observance of Dr. King's birthday, the measure's sponsors said there is a continuing need to prom o t e King's ideals of community service, non-violence, racial harmony and economic opportunity.
