President Clinton appoints record number of blacks to White House posts

In a rare display of diversity at the White House, President Clinton praised the record number of Blacks serving in his administration.

Accompanied by Vice President Al Gore in the Rose Garden, President Clinton said the appointees are a striking example of the diversity he has brought to the highest levels of government.

Noting that during his campaign he said he was going to appoint an administration that looked like America, he started with the Executive Office of the President by appointing the largest number of Blacks in White House history.

Blacks now occupy important positions in all areas of the White House, including the President's Personal Office, the Office of Legal Counsel, the National Security Council, Legislative Affairs, Public Liaison, Intergovernmental Affairs, Communications, Personnel and the National Economic Council.

The appointees shown are:
