Xavier University ranks no. 1 in placing blacks in medical school

Jet, Oct 10, 1994

Xavier University in New Orleans is first in the nation in placing Black students in medical schools, says the American Association of Medical Colleges.

A recently released report by the association, based on 1993 stats, shows that 49 Xavier students were accepted into medical schools.

Xavier graduates who now attend medical school say there are many reasons for Xavier's success. Two major factors, they say, are faculty members who truly care about whether students learn and students who motivate each other.

Xavier, a historically Black and Catholic university with nearly 3,400 students, is followed by Howard University which had 48 students accepted into medical schools.

Rounding out the top 10 were: Hampton University with 36; Cornell University with 31; Spelman College with 29; Johns Hopkins University with 23; Harvard University with 23; Morehouse College with 22; the University of Illinois at Urbana with 22; and Rutgers University with 22.
