Henry "Hank" Ford, a former men's basketball coach at Hampton (VA) University, recently was named athletic director at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Ford, 50, fills a spot that has been vacant since former athletic director David Simmons resigned on July 18, 1994.

"It will be a challenge to try and move the athletic department in the direction of Howard's academics, but there be a happy marriage between athletics and academics," Ford said in the Washington Post.

Ford, a 1969 graduate of Maryland State (now Eastern Shore), was one of several candidates recommended to Howard President H. Patrick Swygert by a 15-member university search committee.

His most recent position was athletic director at Alfred University, an NCAA Division III school in New York.
