Andre Rison celebrates birthday and Super Bowl victory with grand party

Jet, April 28, 1997

Andre Rison, who helped the Green Bay Packers to win Super Bowl XXXI this past season, recently celebrated that victory and his 30th birthday at a star-studded party in Georgia.

At the Andre Rison Birthday Bash/Super Bowl Celebration, Rison was joined by his fiancee, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of the famed hip hop female group TLC, and a host of other celebrities at the Atrium, a performance venue, in Stone Mountain, GA, a suburb of Atlanta.

More than 3,000 people attended the festivities, including New Edition members Michael Bivens and Ralph Tresvant, actor/comedian Robert Townsend, supermodel/actress Tyra Banks, noted singer Keith Sweat, members of the singing group Xscape, Super Bowl MVP Desmond Howard and members of the women's Olympic basketball team.

The happy couple, who have yet to set a date for their wedding, enjoyed each other and their guests. They are still together despite some rather rocky times in their relationship, including Lope's pleading guilty to starting the fire that completely destroyed Rison's six-bedroom, five bath Atlanta mansion in 1995 (JET, Jan. 23, 1995).

Rison shined in Super Bowl XXXI by catching the first touchdown pass of the game to help the Packers on its way to a 35-21 victory over the New England Patriots (JET, Feb. 10). Rison spent that one season with the Packers. He was released by the team after the Super Bowl. At JET press time, he hadn't signed with a team.

The Pro-Bowler began his professional career with the Indianapolis Colts in 1989. From 1990-1994 he was a receiver with the Atlanta Falcons. He spent the 1995-96 season with the Cleveland Browns, now the Baltimore Ravens. Rison was quickly picked up by the Packers for the 1996-97 season after he was cut from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
