Place Mall in Santa Ana, also served as a fund-raiser. More than 20,000 was raised for Olive Crest, a foundation for abused children. Actor Danny Glover served as emcee for the evening's festivities that included tributes to five community leaders and three high school students who have made significant strides toward cultural understanding in Orange County Calif., a suburban county south of Los Angeles. The three high school students each were awarded $2,500 scholarships.

"Nordstrom has established this Community Service Award program as a means of honoring persons who work quietly and selflessly, and who rarely receive the recognition they deserve," said Pete Nordstrom, regional manager of Nordstrom in Orange County.

Glover told Jet that Nordstrom was to be applauded for their efforts at celebrating cultural diversity. He also pointed out that there is a tremendous need for minorities to be able to express their cultural identity.
