Bernice Powell succeeds Ben Chavis as director, racial justice commission - United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice - Brief Article

Bernice Jackson Powell recently was elected the first woman executive director of the United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio.
She succeeds Rev. Benjamin Chavis who is now the national executive director of the NAACP.
"These are difficult days in which we live and our country needs the Commission for Racial Justice perhaps as it has never needed it before" said Ms. Powell.
Ms. Jackson Powell, 44, the former executive associate to the president of the United Church of Christ, noted, "I intend for the Commission for Racial Justice to be a vital, visible and vibrant presence in our communities, and a rekindler of hope in our churches and in our country."
She will be installed October 23 in Washington, D.C.
