Racist party in London captures election win - British National Party wins seat in Tower Hamlets Borough Council in East End of London, England - Brief Article

Jet, Oct 18, 1993

A White racist party in London has won its first electorial victory, upsetting mainstream politicians and raising fears of more inner-city anti-imigrant violence.

The British National Party snatched a seat on the Tower Hamlets Borough Council in London's East Elid--defeating the main opposition Labor Party by seven votes.

The British National Party, the White supremacists group, was formed 11 years ago, drawing on White working class antagonism toward Blacks and Asians.

Tower Hamlets is among the poorest districts in the country and has a large number of immigrants from Bangladesh. Many of the Whites are families of former dock workers.

Derek Beackon, 47, a former bus driver, got 1,480 votes to the Labor Party's 1,473 in the borough's Millwall ward.
