No charges filed in Texas basketball sex shooting incident

Jet, April 25, 1994

The Missouri, TX. man who shot a 17-year-old popular high school basketball player after he allegedly found him naked in the bedroom with his 14-year-old daughter (Jet, March 26), will not face any criminal charges.

A Fort Bend County grand jury recently announced it would not indict Earl Russell, 49, and also decided not to pursue sexual assault charges against the athlete, Jason Williams.

Fort Bend County District Attorney John Healy told the Houston Chronicle that, "Although they (the grand jury) didn't condone what went on in there, they felt, based upon the facts and the law, that no crime had taken place.

"We understand the grand jury decision, and we respect the grand jury decision," the district attorney concluded.

Meanwhile, University of Tulsa coach Tubby Smith revealed to the Williams family that he would find the young athlete economic aid if he wasn't able to fulfill his athletic scholarship, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Despite his disabling gunshot injury, Williams' team, Willowridge High School, went on to win the state championship.
