Black students make history at high schools in Kentucky and Alabama

Jet, Nov 20, 1995

A Black girl from Hazard, KY, recently made history there by becoming the first Black homecoming queen at her high school. Valerie Cornett, 17, a senior at Hazard High School was crowned.

Also making history farther South were a sister and brother from Hamilton, AL, who became their school's first Black homecoming queen and student council president.

At Hamilton High School, siblings Chanter and Cassius Johnson made history when Chanter, a senior, recently became the school's first Black homecoming queen while her brother, Cassius, also a senior, became the school's first student council president last spring.
