Thomas Bradley

Thomas Bradley won the Los Angeles mayor's race on this day, making him the first Black mayor of America's second largest city. Bradley, son of a Texas sharecropper was a 21-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department and the first Black Los Angeles city councilman before he was elected mayor in 1973. He is credited with rebuilding Los Angeles after the 1965 Watts riots, bringing the successful 1984 Summer Olympics to Los Angeles and establishing the city as an international business and trading center. Bradley retired in 1993 after he served an unprecedented five terms as mayor.
