> Henry O. Tanner, famous Black artist who achieved his greatest honors in Europe, was born on this date in Pittsburgh, PA. The son of an AME Church bishop, Tanner was encouraged by his family to enter the ministry. However, he preferred art and chose to study at the Academie Julian in Paris. In 1897, his dramatic painting, The Resurrection of Lazarus, won him recognition as an artist of great ability and the French government purchased the work for the distinguished Luxemborg Gallery.
