Hampton (VA) University sophomore Roberto Cavalcante recently won the NCAA Division II National Singles championship by defeating Rodrigo Urzua of Lander College 6-3, 6-4 during the team and individual championships held in Kansas City, MO.
Cavalcante, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, became the first Hampton Pirate to win a national individual championship in individual competition since Roger de Santis Guedes and Bruce Foxworth teamed up to win the national doubles title in 1976.
And for the third consecutive season, Hampton's men's tennis team finished second for the national team title.
