Norfolk State University recently was awarded a $10 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy to boost research activities in its materials research center. The grant is the largest ever in the 60-year history of the university which is located in Norfolk, VA.

"This is a unique and multifaceted grant," said Dr. Harrison B. Wilson, president of Norfolk. "It has research, teaching and physical expansion components, and it provides significant funds for faculty research initiatives."

The grant will help the university establish additional programs designed to increase the number of minority students enrolled in graduate science programs across the country, provide funds for the procurement of high tech laser instruments for the lab, pay for a 10,000 square-foot addition to the Roy A. Woods Science Building, and fund the recruitment of scientists for the NSU faculty.
