Howard University Board of Trustees approves reorganizing plan to save $2 million

Jet, Dec 23, 1996

Howard University's Board of Trustees recently approved a controversial plan to reorganize the institution.

The plan, which was introduced by the university's president, H. Patrick Swygert, who took over in August 1995, proposes to reduce the number of schools at the historically Black university to 11 from 16 by August 1997 (JET, May 27).

The plan also makes fund-raising a major priority and recommends creating a center to promote good teaching and another center to make emerging technology available to students.

Officials say the changes may eliminate some jobs but would save the Washington, D.C., university $2 million that could be redirected to other programs.
