Jet, Dec 23, 1996

Shawon Dunston, the ex,-Chicago Cub who left the team for free agency last year and played with the San Francisco Giants for a season, is back. Dunston recently agreed to a one-year contract with the Cubs reportedly worth $2 million and will assume his former position as shortstop.

Dunston's $2 million salary includes $400,000 in incentives based on plate appearances.

The two-time all-star who batted .265 with 98 homers and 448 RBIs for the Cubs became a free agent when he was asked to play third base last season. He had spent his 11-year career with the Cubs before he signed with the Giants on Jan.

Dunston, 33, said he is glad to be back. "I wanted to play my whole career with Chicago ... It got interrupted. Now I'm back," he told the Chicago Sun-Times.
