Yale Univ. establishes Ph.D. in black studies - new doctoral degree program at Yale University - Brief Article

Jet, June 14, 1993

A part-time world history and Black studies professor at Roxbury Community College in Boston has been fired after officials learned that he allegedly used phony credentials on his resume to gain employment in January.

John D. Allen claimed he had earned degrees from Harvard and McGill universities, Roxbury president Carolyn Brown said. Brown said the apparently fake credentials were discovered during a routine check of personnel records.

Allen denies that his credentials are fake. Brown said he claims his records are listed under a Muslim name he once used. He hasn't produced evidence, she said. The matter is under police investigation. Yale Univ. Establishes Ph.D. In Black Studies

Students at Yale University can now earn a joint doctoral degree in African-American studies coupled with a more traditional discipline.

Doctoral students would be admitted to the Black studies department and to another department of their choice. Eleven departments, ranging from history to American Studies, will participate in the program, school officials said, and other departments have expressed interest.

About six students are expected to be admitted during the fall of 1994.
