He is the round mound of rebound with a proclivity for braggadocio, but now Charles Barkley finally has something to crow about.

NBA officials recently announced that Barkley was the league's Most Valuable Player for the 1992-93 season, marking the first time in 10 years that the award has not been given to Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson or Larry Bird.

Barkley, 30, received 59 first-place votes, ahead of Hakeem Olajuwon (22), former MVP Jordan (13) and Patrick Ewing (4). He was fifth in the league in scoring (25.6 ppg), sixth in rebounding (12.2), and averaged 5.1 assists, leading his team to a league high 62 wins in the regular season.

"I think Hakeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing all had great years. I think I was fortunate enough to be on a team with the best record in the league," Barkley observed.

Sir Charles, as he is now called by fans, said he knew he had won one week prior to the announcement but had to keep it on the QT.

"This was probably the first time in my life, I actually kept a secret. I didn't tell my wife or my family -- I definitely couldn't tell my family because they all have big mouths," he joked.
