FBI report lists cities with highest murder rates in 1993

The city with the highest murder rate in the country last year was Gary, IN, where there were 89 murders for every 100,000 people, according to a recently released FBI report.
Gary has a population of 117,000, figures from the 1990 U.S. Census reveal.
Nationwide, there were 24,526 murders reported to police, a 3.2 percent increase from 1992, the report noted.
Handguns were the weapon used by the majority of killers. Guns were used in 57 percent, or 13,980 of the murders last year, showed stats from Crime in the United States, an annual publication released by the FBI.
