Dr. Herman R. Branson, college prexy, scholar dies in D.C

Dr. Herman R. Branson, 80, who was president of two universities and a professor of physics at a third, died recently of heart ailments in Washington, D.C.

Branson taught physics at Howard University in the District from 1941 to 1968, when he was named president of Central State University in Wilberforce, OH. In 1971, he took over the presidency of Lincoln (PA.) University, serving until 1985.

A graduate of Virginia State University and the University of Cincinnati, Branson held 10 honorary degrees and wrote more than 100 scholarly papers in six different disciplines--physics, biology, chemistry, medicine, mathematics and education. The papers were models of scholarly excellence.

He is survived by his wife, Carolynn; a son, Herman; and a daughter, Carolynne.
