Jet, June 26, 1995
Denver Mayor Wellington Webb recently won a second term and promised to mend the wounds that divided the city during a runoff campaign.
"Now what we want to do is bind the city together," Webb told hundreds of supporters at a victory celebration. "There's no north, south, east or west. There's just one city--Denver."
With all 430 precincts reporting, Webb had 66,884 votes or 54 percent and Councilwoman May DeGroot, had 56,725 votes, or 46 percent, according to the Denver Election Commission.
Webb had finished 97 votes behind Ms. DeGroot in the May 2 general election, forcing a runoff.

Webb, Denver's first Black mayor, carried all parts of the city except the minority-White southeast, Ms. DeGroot's stronghold. He won 40 percent of the vote there.
After the election, Webb seemed eager to mend any rifts with Ms. DeGroot. "I told her I would extend my hand to her and her supporters because we have to come together," he said.
