New York Knicks' Patrick Ewing out for season after two-hour surgery following wrist injury

Jet, Jan 12, 1998

New York Knicks star center Patrick Ewing will miss the remainder of this season after he sustained a severe wrist injury in a game against

To prevent possible nerve damage, Ewing underwent an immediate two-hour operation for a dislocated bone and torn ligaments. He will wear a cast for about two months before beginning a strenuous rehabilitation.

Ewing, 35, was injured late in the first half when he leaped to convert an alley-oop pass from teammate Charlie Ward and was fouled in midair by the Bucks Andrew Lang. Ewing crashed to the floor, using his wrist to break the fall.

The injury is so severe that even the future of the veteran's playing career is uncertain. Doctors are optimistic because they were able to operate so soon after the injury.

Ewing's injury, for all practical purposes, deflates any hopes of winning a championship this season without their leading scorer for the Knicks, who are currently struggling.

Ewing has only missed 20 games in the last 10 seasons.
